The Trump Organization is being subject to criminal charges, the New York prosecutor announced on tuesday in collaboration with the Manhattan prosecutor. The group owned by the family of the former US President has since been under the investigation of US justice for civil offenses.

The Trump Organization is made up of hundreds of businesses linked to Donald Trump or those related to him, including hotels, real estate companies, and golf courses. His legal troubles are only increasing.

The legal proceedings against the Trump Organization

Fabien Levy, spokesperson for New York State Attorney Letitia James said « we have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into this organization is no longer solely civilian in nature » before adding « we are now investigating actively on the Trump Organization in criminal matters, together with the Manhattan prosecutor ”.

It should be remembered that the Trump Organization was initially under investigation for payments made, before the 2016 presidential election, to two alleged mistresses of the Republican billionaire. Then extended to allegations of tax fraud, insurance fraud or bank fraud, this investigation began in 2018 under the guidance of Manhattan prosecutor Cyrus Vance, who is a Democrat.

The investigation is being held in confidence before a grand jury. Attorney Vance obtained tax returns from Donald Trump for the past eight years and from the Trump Organization in February after a long legal battle.

Trump accuses of a witch hunt

Donald Trump, who left the White House in January, denies any wrongdoing and called the investigation « a continuation of the greatest political witch hunt in the history of our country. »
In early April, as the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation led into suspicions of tax or bank fraud, the Trump Organization reinforced its team of defenders by hiring experienced 84 years old criminal lawyer Ronald Fischetti.

However, six months after his electoral defeat, and also after having escaped two impeachment procedures, the former US President still remains popular with Republican voters. He still seems listened to by those voters, 67% of whom, according to a CBS News poll last weekend, believe Joe Biden is not a legitimately elected President.

These supports can also be for the Trump Organization in this endless judicial fight launched against this unusual character of the White House.
